Minimal Remixes - VA [Poverty Electronics, 2023]

These tracks are all reworkings of my improvisation for no-input mixer, Minimal. They're 'remixes' in the sense that the original is mixer music but there were no separate tracks to play around with. The contributors here take my piece whole and run with it, in a wide variety of unpredictable directions, each in their own unique idiom(s), fancies, conjectures. I thank them all for taking the music to new places I never could have dreamed up!

Callosal - Massimo Magee [Why Keith Dropped the S, 2022]

For two no-input mixing boards and one Joseon bowl fragment.

The two separate feedback systems were only able to communicate with and influence each other by vibrating through the bowl fragment. This fragment of a bowl made in Korea’s Joseon period was discovered by Alfred 23 Harth in Korea and given to me as a gift, for which I am very grateful. To place this artefact from centuries ago between two implements of modern electronic music-making suggests a larger point.

It is often, if not always, the case that different sets of potentials (technological or otherwise) can only operate with and on each other through the traditions, attitudes and frames of thought passed down to us by our history. In such situations, it is wise not only to evaluate the possibilities themselves as though they were in isolation, but also to take into account the breadth or narrowness of these attitudinal conduits through which they must pass in their constant communication with each other as they co-evolve, in order to properly gauge how this evolution is developing and what might be changed in order to encourage progress along a more universally beneficial path.
